In The Story of Joseph: Seeing the Bigger Picture (Genesis 37–50, anchored in Genesis 12), we follow a narrative that is both painfully human and unmistakably theological. Joseph’s life exposes the gap between what God has promised and what we can presently explain. The text does not minimize betrayal, injustice, or long seasons of waiting. It shows a man who pursues integrity when it costs him, serves when he would rather withdraw, and keeps moving forward without a clear map. Genesis refuses simplistic conclusions. Instead, it forms a wiser kind of faith, one that learns to read hardship through the lens of God’s character and commitments.

What holds the story together is not Joseph’s competence, nor his resilience, but the covenant promise God made to Abraham: that through his line the nations would be blessed (Gen. 12:3). Joseph becomes a key instrument in preserving that family and sustaining God’s mission, even as human sin threatens to unravel it. The chapters are frank about evil. Brothers sell their brother. Power is abused. False accusations land. Yet the storyline insists that human wickedness does not get the final word. God remains holy and sovereign, able to bring genuine good out of what was intended for harm. The arc also points forward. The rescue of this family moves through Judah toward the coming King, and Joseph’s descent followed by exaltation foreshadows the greater Deliverer. This series will press our church toward faithful obedience in the present, a refusal to be ruled by bitterness or control, and a deeper confidence that God keeps His promises, even when the plot is still unfolding.
