Baptism Instructions

Will I be baptized in the 8:30am or 10:15am service?

We offer baptisms in BOTH services so look for communication from our leadership team to let you know what service you'll be baptized in.

What Can I expect?

We usually baptize once or twice a year at The Summit Church.  Typically, there are several other people being baptized on the same day so there is usually no fear in being the only one.  One of the Pastors will conduct the baptism, along with any friends or family who would like to participate. One of the pastors will walk you through the details prior to the baptism.  This will help each individual feel comfortable with the decision they are making before they step into the water.

What Should I Bring with me?

  • Clothes you don't mind getting wet; Summit t-shirt or dark t-shirt (girls should wear shorts and a Summit t-shirt or a bathing suit with a dark t-shirt over it, guys should wear swim trunks with a dark t-shirt)
  • Towel (you will get wet, so bring a towel to dry off after baptism)
  • Washcloth or handkerchief (the Pastor doing the baptism will use this to put over your mouth and nose when you are going under to prevent water from going up your nose)
  • Change of clothes
  • Friends and family members (invite as many as possible to be a part of this special day)

What will happen when I am Being baptized?

  • The Pastor will welcome the congregation and explain the significance of baptism
  • The Pastor will baptize one person at a time (he will tell the congregation your name)
  • You will carefully step into the baptism pool and sit down with your back facing the hallway you waited in and your knees slightly bent in front of you. The one baptizing you will take your hands (and the washcloth) and use them to cover your nose and mouth when he places you under water.
  • The Pastor will say something similar to the following, “Because you have professed faith in Jesus Christ and want to obey the Lord’s command, I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  Buried in the likeness of Jesus’ death [the Pastor will dunk you backwards into the water and then pull you right back up] and raised to walk in newness of life.
  • After you come up out of the water, the congregation will usually celebrate this public display of faith by clapping
  • You can dry off in the back room and then head toward the bathroom where you can change into dry clothes, and then join us in the worship service
